How to read this

New to the World Cup? Each team plays three group games first; the teams that finish near the top go through to the knockout rounds.

How points work: a team earns nothing in the groups, then picks up points once it reaches the Round of 32, and more the further it goes, plus one point for every goal it scores all tournament.

Why the table moves: teams play on different days, so some have games in hand (fewer played than others). The order will keep shifting until everyone has played the same number. The "Played" figure on each team shows where they are.
